CICOD promotes seed farming in Kasungu

Kasungu, November 4: Circle for Integrated Community Development (CICOD), has donated groundnut seed to farmers under Santhe Extension Planning Area (EPA) in Kasungu in a quest to improve agricultural productivity and ensuring the availability of certified seed in the district.

The donation, which is in form of 150 kilogrammes of CG9 groundnut variety seed, was specifically made for Mchenga Farming Club as part of seed multiplication intervention under the Enhancing Access to Profitable and Inclusive Agriculture Markets for Smallholder Farmers project.

Making the donation on Friday, the Programmes Manager for CICOD, Edward Thole said empowering small-scale farmers to venture into seed multiplication farming can increase the availability of certified seed and help participating farmers to generate income.

Thole said: “Instead of going to town walking long distances looking for certified seed, people can easily access it within their area as the small-scale farmers will now be able to produce it locally through the seed multiplication farming thereby reducing some costs.

“In addition, through the production of certified seed, small-scale farmers can generate income which can help improve their living standards because seed is marketable and profitable.”

Thole urged farmers to adhere to procedures and guidance of seed multiplication farming so that they breed pure certified seed that can benefit farmers.

Speaking on behalf of Mchenga Club, Group Village Headman Yohane applauded the initiative stating that it is the first time for the village members to venture into seed multiplication farming.
